Low carbon accumulation in a macro‐tidal mangrove forest on the Amazon coast

چکیده

The important role mangrove forests play in sequestering organic carbon is well known, yet rates of accumulation macro-tidal ecosystems are poorly resolved. Here we use 210Pb dating to present a 125-yr record carbon, nutrient and trace metal sediments from an Amazon forest. We find that the rate ranged 23.7 74.7 g m−2 yr−1 (average 38 ± 13.5 yr−1), significantly lower than global averages for forests. Planktonic primary production in a tidally influenced mangrove forest on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

The seasonal variation of planktonic primary productivity was measured during one year in the main channel in the interior part of the mangrove forest of the Estero de Morales (Estero de Punta Morales), a mangrove system located in the Golfo de Nicoya at the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Samples were incubated at the surface, 0.5 m and 1.0 m depth and the "light and dark bottle technique" was em...

High-resolution forest carbon stocks and emissions in the Amazon.

Efforts to mitigate climate change through the Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) depend on mapping and monitoring of tropical forest carbon stocks and emissions over large geographic areas. With a new integrated use of satellite imaging, airborne light detection and ranging, and field plots, we mapped aboveground carbon stocks and emissions at 0.1-ha resolution over 4....

Total carbon accumulation in a tropical forest landscape

BACKGROUND Regrowing tropical forests worldwide sequester important amounts of carbon and restore part of the C emissions emitted by deforestation. However, there are large uncertainties concerning the rates of carbon accumulation after the abandonment of agricultural and pasture land. We report here accumulation of total carbon stocks (TCS) in a chronosequence of secondary forests at a mid-ele...

The changing Amazon forest

Long-term monitoring of distributed, multiple plots is the key to quantify macroecological patterns and changes. Here we examine the evidence for concerted changes in the structure, dynamics and composition of old-growth Amazonian forests in the late twentieth century. In the 1980s and 1990s, mature forests gained biomass and underwent accelerated growth and dynamics, all consistent with a wide...
